Demirkoy

Kırklareli, Turkey

Why visit Demirkoy?

Demirköy ("iron village") is a forested district in the Istranca (Yıldız) Mountains of northern Kırklareli Province, near the Bulgarian border. It takes its name from the Demirköy Foundry (also known as the Fatih Foundry), an Ottoman iron-casting works founded in the 15th century to exploit local iron ore — cannonballs used in Mehmed the Conqueror's 1453 siege of Constantinople are known to have been cast here. The foundry operated for over four centuries before its 19th-century decline; its ruins have been excavated and partly restored since the early 2000s.
