Pinarhisar

Kırklareli, Turkey

Why visit Pinarhisar?

Pınarhisar is a district town in central Kırklareli Province with a long settlement history — cult sites, rock-cut altars, cave formations and Thracian-era tumuli are scattered through the district and its villages, including the Ambarkaya altar stone, the Pekmezdere cave, the Kaynarca cave monastery, and the İslambeyli tumulus (excavated 1992, finds now in Kırklareli Museum). Ancient sources record the Persian king Darius camping near the district's water sources in the 4th century BC. Pınarhisar's Byzantine hilltop castle is the best-known single landmark.
