Why visit Akyaka?
Akyaka is a district of Kars Province and the seat town on Turkey's closed border with Armenia — it is the last Turkish town before the frontier. The town sits on the historic Kars–Gyumri railway, originally completed in 1899, which was an important rail link between Turkey and the USSR (and later Armenia) during the Soviet era. The line has not carried cross-border traffic since Turkey closed the border with Armenia in 1993, though Akyaka's station remains in use for the domestic Kars–Akyaka segment, and Turkish and Armenian officials have in recent years discussed restoring the cross-border route.
