Digor

Kars, Turkey

Why visit Digor?

Digor is a district of Kars Province in far eastern Turkey, near the Armenian border. Along with the rest of Kars, the area was under Russian occupation for roughly four decades before it was retaken on 22 October 1920. Digor is known for its historic Armenian churches, including Beşkilise ("Five Churches"), of which only the Aziz Sarkis Church survives, with inscriptions dating to 1033 — it is the closest of the historic Kars-region churches to Kars city itself. The famed ruined medieval city of Ani, once capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom and a major stop on trade routes between Central Asia and Anatolia, lies within the broader Kars region near Digor district.
