Arpacay

Kars, Turkey

Why visit Arpacay?

Arpaçay is a district of Kars Province, in far eastern Turkey along the Arpaçay (Akhurian) River, which forms part of the border with Armenia. The river valley has been settled since around 3000 BC. Just east of the district, near the village of Ani, lie the ruins of the medieval city of Ani — once the capital of the Bagratid kingdom of Armenia (from 961) and a major stop on east-west caravan routes, until Mongol raids, a major 1319 earthquake, and shifting trade routes led to its decline. Ani's ruins, spanning Armenian, Byzantine, Seljuk, Georgian, and Ottoman periods, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
