Tutak is the seat of Tutak District in Ağrı Province, with a population of about 7,059 (2021) and an elevation of roughly 1,535 m on a small plain surrounded by high mountains. It sits on the road between Ağrı city and Patnos, on the western edge of the Murat River — one of the two main headwater branches of the Euphrates, which rises near Mount Ararat and flows westward through mountainous Eastern Anatolia. The Murat River valley provides fertile farmland for grain cultivation and livestock.

Tutak has a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers. Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant weather.

Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani Airport (AJI IATA) is about 34 km away. Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN IATA) is also accessible from the south.

By Car / Road

Tutak is on the D-965 road between Patnos and Ağrı. Minibuses and buses serve the route.
