The town is named after its location — "gölbaşı" means "lake head" — referring to the Azaplı Lake (Azaplı Gölü), a freshwater lake surrounded by reed beds and farmland. The area is known for its wetlands and birdlife, as well as its apple orchards.
Gölbaşı has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. Spring and autumn are pleasant.

Adıyaman Airport (ADF IATA) is about 30 km south. Malatya Airport (MLX IATA) is about 60 km north. Both have flights from Istanbul.
By Car / Road
Gölbaşı is on the D-850 highway between Adıyaman and Malatya, about 30 minutes north of Adıyaman city. Regular minibuses connect to Adıyaman.
The town is small and compact. Taxis and dolmuşes serve the surrounding area.
