Couva
Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo, Trinidad and Tobago
Why visit Couva?
Couva is an urban town of roughly 45,000 people in west-central Trinidad, situated south of Port of Spain and Chaguanas and north of San Fernando. It is the main commercial and administrative centre of the Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo region and one of the fastest-growing towns in Trinidad and Tobago. The Greater Couva area includes the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and the Port of Point Lisas, making it a significant hub for the country's petrochemical and manufacturing sectors.
Couva's history stretches back to the late 18th century when British settlers established themselves near the mouth of the Couva River, originally called "Rio de Cuba" on early Spanish maps. For much of its early existence, the village was a small clearing in sugarcane fields, populated mainly by indentured workers of Indian origin and former African slaves. The arrival of the railway in 1880 transformed the settlement, and by 1921 the population had grown to 2,667. During World War II, the Camden Auxiliary Air Base was established here as an emergency airstrip. The town continued to grow through the latter half of the 20th century, though the closure of Caroni (1975) Ltd. in the early 2000s dealt a significant blow to the local economy. Since then, former sugar lands have been repurposed for housing, commercial development, and the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Couva has a tropical climate with temperatures averaging 25–31°C year-round. The wet season runs from June to December, with the heaviest rainfall in August and September (around 250 mm per month). The driest months are February through April. The town is flat and walkable in its centre, but sprawls outward along major roads.

Couva's town centre is compact and walkable. Route taxis and maxi taxis connect the town centre to surrounding villages such as California, Freeport, and McBean.
