Why visit Freeport?

Freeport is a residential community in the Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo region of Trinidad, situated between Couva and Chaguanas along the Southern Main Road corridor. The village is a quiet, suburban settlement with a mix of residential homes, small shops, and community facilities. It is primarily a dormitory community for workers employed in Couva, Chaguanas, and the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.

The area is flat and low-lying, reflecting its location on Trinidad's central plain, historically part of the Caroni sugar belt. The climate is tropical, with temperatures averaging 25–31°C and a wet season from June to December. Freeport is not a tourist destination but represents the everyday suburban character of central Trinidad.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Piarco International Airport (POS) is the nearest airport, approximately 30 km northeast. A taxi to Freeport costs around TT$200–300 and takes about 35–45 minutes.

By Car / Road

Freeport is located along the Southern Main Road between Couva (south) and Chaguanas (north). From Port of Spain, take the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway south to the Chaguanas/Couva area and follow the Southern Main Road (approximately 30 minutes). Route taxis and maxi taxis serve the Southern Main Road corridor, connecting Freeport to both Couva and Chaguanas.

The village is small and walkable. Route taxis run along the main road to Couva and Chaguanas. A private vehicle is useful for reaching destinations off the main road.

Where to eat?

Local food vendors and small restaurants along the main road serve Indo-Trinidadian fare including doubles, roti, and curry. Prices are affordable, with a doubles costing around TT$5–6. Chaguanas, just north, has a much wider selection of dining options.

Where to drink?

Rum shops in the village serve local rum and beer. Coconut water and other non-alcoholic drinks are available from roadside vendors. For more variety, Chaguanas has additional options.

What should you buy?

Small shops and parlours along the main road sell everyday provisions. For more extensive shopping, Chaguanas (a few minutes north) has large retail centres including Price Plaza and the Chaguanas Market.
