About Pangaimotu

Pangaimotu is a small island in the Vava'u group, lying just south of the main island 'Utu Vava'u and connected to it by a land bridge near the village of Toula. With a population of around 200, Pangaimotu is one of the most accessible outer islands in Vava'u — it is effectively a drive-on island, reached from Neiafu in about 15 minutes. The island is low-lying, ringed by white-sand beaches and a protective fringing reef, with the calm waters of the Port of Refuge on its northern side and the open channels of the southern Vava'u group to the south. The main settlements are small fishing and farming villages, largely untouched by mass tourism.

Pangaimotu should not be confused with the island of the same name off Nuku'alofa in Tongatapu — this is a different, larger island with its own distinct character. It offers some of the finest coastal scenery in the Vava'u group, with secluded coves, turquoise lagoons, and the Avai'o'vuna Swamp, a protected wetland area of ecological importance. The dry season (May–October) is the best time to visit.

  • Avai'o'vuna Swamp — a protected coastal wetland on the northern side of the island, important for migratory birds and native vegetation. A short boardwalk or track leads into the swamp. Free.
