About 'Utungake
'Utungake is a small island in the Vava'u group, connected to the south-eastern tip of 'Utu Vava'u by a land bridge. With a population of around 300 spread across a few small settlements, 'Utungake is one of the more accessible outer-island communities in Vava'u — reachable by road from Neiafu in about 15 minutes. The island is low-lying and fringed by white-sand beaches and a protective fringing reef, with the calm, clear waters of the Port of Refuge on its northern side and the open channels of southern Vava'u to the south. The main economic activities are fishing, small-scale agriculture, and increasingly tourism, as several day-trip operations and a few small lodges have opened here.
'Utungake's position at the southern entrance to the Port of Refuge means it has some of the finest coastal scenery in the Vava'u group, with secluded coves, turquoise water, and views across to the islands of Kapa, 'Euakafa, and Mounu. The dry season (May–October) is the best time to visit, with settled weather, calm seas, and the humpback whale season in full swing.
