About Longomapu

Longomapu is a traditional village on the western coast of 'Utu Vava'u, roughly 15 km west of Neiafu. With a population of around 400, Longomapu is one of the larger settlements on the western side of Vava'u's main island, set on a hillside overlooking a long, protected beach and the turquoise waters of the western channel. The village is known for its white-sand beach, considered one of the best swimming beaches on the main island, and for its traditional crafts, particularly the weaving of fine pandanus mats and the production of tapa cloth.

The village is named for the long (longo) beach (mapu) that defines its coastline. The offshore waters are protected by the reefs and islands of western Vava'u, creating calm conditions for swimming and snorkelling. The hills behind the village are planted with vanilla and coconut palms. Longomapu sees few international visitors despite its beautiful setting, making it a peaceful base for exploring western Vava'u. The dry season (May–October) is the ideal time to visit, with settled weather and the humpback whale season adding to the appeal.
