Doi Luang National Park

Chiang Rai, Thailand

Why visit Doi Luang National Park?

Doi Luang National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยหลวง) is one of the largest national parks in Northern Thailand, covering 1,169 km² across three provinces: Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Phayao. Established on 16 April 1990, it encompasses the north-westernmost mountain chains of the Phi Pan Nam Range within the districts of Mae Suai, Phan, and Wiang Pa Pao (Chiang Rai), Wang Nuea and Ngao (Lampang), and Mae Chai and Mueang Phayao (Phayao). The park was formed by combining four existing protected areas.

The park features rugged rock formations, scenic waterfalls, and diverse forest types. The highest point is Doi Luang at 1,426 m, not to be confused with the higher 1,694 m Doi Luang further south in the same range. The sources of the Wang River and the Lao River originate in this mountainous area.

The best time to visit is the cool season from November to February. The rainy season (June–October) brings lush vegetation but challenging trail conditions.
