Mae Chan

Chiang Rai, Thailand

Why visit Mae Chan?

Mae Chan (แม่จัน) is a district town in northern Chiang Rai Province, located on the Mae Chan River. It serves as a local administrative and market centre for the surrounding agricultural area, which produces rice, lychees, and longans. The district includes Doi Nang Non ("Mountain of the Sleeping Lady"), a distinctive ridge in the Daen Lao Range. Mae Chan is primarily a transit town for travellers heading to Mae Sai, the Golden Triangle, and Mae Salong, with the junction to Mae Salong (Hwy 1089) located just west of town.

The climate follows the Northern Thailand pattern: cool season (Nov–Feb), hot season (Mar–May), and rainy season (Jun–Oct). The best time to visit is November to February.
