Ruangwa

Lindi, Tanzania

Why visit Ruangwa?

Ruangwa is a small farming town in central Lindi Region, situated on the Ruangwa River. It is a centre for cashew nut production and has a weekly market that serves villages from a wide radius. The area is part of the southern Tanzania cashew belt, and during the harvest season (December–February), the town is busy with traders buying nuts from farmers. The Ruangwa River is a seasonal watercourse that flows through sandy beds for much of the year, providing water for irrigation during the dry season.

How do you get there?

Ruangwa is about 80 km northwest of Lindi on a partly tarmac road (1.5–2 hours by bus). Regular dala-dalas run from Lindi's main bus terminal.

The town is compact and walkable. The river, farms, and surrounding villages are accessible on foot or by boda-boda.

What are the things to do?

  • Ruangwa River — a sandy seasonal river that widens during the March–May rains; local farmers irrigate vegetables along its banks.

  • Ruangwa Market — a lively weekly market (especially Wednesdays) where cashews, cassava, beans, and fresh produce are traded.

  • Cashew orchards — the surrounding countryside is planted with cashew trees; during harvest, women crack and dry the nuts by the roadside.

  • Market day visit — the Wednesday market is the social and commercial heart of the district.

  • Cashew farm tour — visit a local farm to see how cashews are harvested, sun-dried, and shelled.

  • River walk — walk along the sandy riverbed in the dry season; watch for birdlife and local fishing activity.

  • Village walk — explore the surrounding Mwera and Makonde farming hamlets.
