Kilwa Kivinje
Lindi, Tanzania
Why visit Kilwa Kivinje?
Kilwa Kivinje is a historic 19th-century Swahili trading port on the mainland coast of the Lindi Region, approximately 20 km south of Kilwa Masoko. Unlike the island ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani, Kilwa Kivinje is a living town with a remarkable collection of coral-stone mansions, ruined German colonial forts, and narrow streets that recall its heyday as a major slave-trading and ivory port. The town was an important centre during the Omani Arab period and later under German colonial rule. Today it has a quieter, more atmospheric character than Kilwa Masoko, with fewer tourists and a strong sense of historical depth. The population is predominantly Swahili Muslim, and the town is surrounded by coconut palms and cashew plantations.

By Car / Road
Kilwa Kivinje is accessible by road from Kilwa Masoko (approximately 20 km, 30 minutes by car or dala-dala) and from Lindi (approximately 130 km south, 2.5 hours by bus). The road from Kilwa Masoko is unpaved. Shared minibuses (dala-dalas) run between the two Kilwa towns.
