Liwale

Lindi, Tanzania

Why visit Liwale?

Liwale is the westernmost district of Lindi Region, a remote area of miombo woodland and sparsely populated bush bordering the Selous Game Reserve (part of the larger Nyerere/Selous ecosystem, one of Africa's largest protected wilderness areas). The town of Liwale is a frontier settlement serving as an administrative and trading centre for the surrounding villages, and was historically the starting point for hunting safaris — largely organized by German colonists — heading into the Selous. The district was also a center of the 1905–07 Maji Maji rebellion against German colonial rule. Liwale District is home to Ngindo communities, whose culture centers on cassava, the district's staple crop; the Ngindo also observe an annual ritual trek (Ngende) across the Selous to Ilonga in Ulanga District, held roughly between mid-August and mid-September. It is one of the least accessible district capitals in Tanzania.
