Lindi Region stretches along Tanzania's southern Indian Ocean coast, bordering Mozambique. It is one of Tanzania's less-visited regions but rich in history as the centre of the medieval Kilwa Sultanate — the Kilwa archipelago was once the richest trading city on the Swahili Coast. The region includes the historic ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Kilwa Kivinje (UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the ferry town of Kilwa Masoko, and the arid, sparsely populated interior.
When is the best time to visit?
June–October (dry, cooler). The long rains (March–May) bring heavy rainfall and make dirt roads challenging.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Lindi town is the regional hub. Buses connect Lindi to Dar es Salaam (8 hours), Mtwara (3 hours), and Masasi. For Kilwa, take a bus to Kilwa Masoko (3 hours north of Lindi). The interior (Liwale, Nachingwea) is remote with poor roads.
Where should you go?
- Lindi — the regional capital on the Lindi Creek, a historic port town with German colonial buildings and a lively fish market.
- Mtama — a small town inland from Lindi, known as the birthplace of Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan.
- Nachingwea — a remote inland town, the terminus of the now-defunct Southern Province Railway.
- Kilwa Masoko — the main gateway to the Kilwa archipelago, a bustling Swahili port with ferry connections to Kilwa Kisiwani.
- Kilwa Kivinje — a historic 19th-century slaving and trading port with a ruined German fort and coral-stone mansions.
- Ruangwa — a farming town in central Lindi Region, known for the Ruangwa River and cashew production.
- Liwale — a remote district capital in the miombo woodlands of western Lindi.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Lindi is famous for seafood (grilled snapper, lobster, octopus curry) and cashew nuts (the region's main cash crop). Mchicha wa kamba (cassava leaves with prawns) is a local speciality.
What is the culture like?
The region is predominantly Muslim Swahili, with a strong Mwera and Makonde population. The Kilwa Festival (dates vary) celebrates the Swahili heritage with dhow races, music, and cultural displays.
Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
WhatsAppWhat are the standout experiences?
- Kilwa Kisiwani ruins — the Great Mosque and Husuni Kubwa palace, UNESCO-listed medieval Swahili architecture (accessible by boat from Kilwa Masoko).
- Dhow trip in Kilwa Bay — sail among the islands and visit Songo Mnara (another ruined city).
- Lindi Creek sunset — the mangrove-fringed creek at Lindi is beautiful in the late afternoon.
