Mvumi

Mvumi is a small market town in Dodoma Region, about 40 km southeast of Dodoma city. It is best known for the Mvumi Hospital, a large Anglican mission hospital founded in 1947 that serves a catchment area of several hundred thousand people. The town is situated in a farming area (sunflowers, sorghum, groundnuts) and is the site of the well-known Mvumi Pottery cooperative, which produces hand-thrown ceramic pottery and tiles.

Mvumi is about 40 km southeast of Dodoma on the road to Mpwapwa. Dala-dalas from Dodoma take about 45 minutes.

The town is walkable. Motorbike taxis (boda-boda) are available for trips to outlying villages.

• Mvumi Pottery — the pottery cooperative is the main attraction: watch potters throwing and firing ceramics for sale.

• Mvumi Hospital — one of the largest mission hospitals in Tanzania; visitors may tour the grounds (arrange at the administration office).

• Mvumi Mission — the Anglican mission compound with a beautiful old church and school buildings.

• Pottery workshop visit — watch the production process and buy direct from the cooperative.

• Village walk — walk through the sunflower and sorghum fields with a local guide.

• Church service — the Sunday service at Mvumi Mission is a lively affair with Gogo hymns.

Small eateries serve ugali, beans, and chai. The hospital canteen has basic meals.

Mvumi Pottery produces excellent ceramic kitchenware, tiles, and decorative bowls — a genuine local craft souvenir.
