Chamwino

Chamwino is a rural district east of Dodoma city, located at the western edge of the Ukaguru Mountains. The area is predominantly Gogo and agricultural, known for sunflower farming and the Chamwino State Lodge (Ikulu), the official presidential country residence used for high-level retreats and conferences. Chamwino also serves as a gateway to the Ukaguru escarpment.

Chamwino is about 15 km east of Dodoma on the road to Mpwapwa. Dala-dalas from Dodoma's terminal reach Chamwino in 30 minutes.

The district centre is a crossroads with a few shops. For the state lodge and Ukaguru foothills, you need private transport.

• Ikulu Chamwino (State Lodge) — the presidential retreat, set in landscaped grounds on a hillside. Exterior viewing only; the grounds are sometimes open to the public on national days.

• Ukaguru foothills — the edge of the Ukaguru Mountains offers scenic walking through miombo woodland.

• Traditional Gogo homesteads — the villages around Chamwino maintain traditional round huts (tembe) with thatched roofs.

• Walking in the Ukaguru hills — a half-day guided walk into the forest reserve for birdwatching and views of the Dodoma plateau.

• Cultural visit — learn about Gogo farming (sunflowers, sorghum) and traditional life.

Small food stalls in Chamwino market serve ugali, beans, and grilled meat.

Chai and bottled soft drinks at market stalls. Pack water.

Chamwino State Lodge (by official invitation only). For other visitors: day trip from Dodoma (15 km).

Sunflower oil, groundnuts, and woven baskets from local farmers.
