Chemba

Dodoma, Tanzania

Why visit Chemba?

Chemba is a remote district in northern Dodoma Region, bordering Manyara Region. It is one of the least developed and least visited areas in central Tanzania, known for traditional blacksmithing and ironworking, pottery, and the dry, rocky landscape of the Irangi escarpment zone. The district centre is a small settlement with a weekly market that draws farmers and pastoralists from the surrounding bush.

How do you get there?

Chemba is about 120 km north of Dodoma, accessible via a dirt road from Kondoa (40 km east). 4WD is essential in the rainy season. Buses from Dodoma are infrequent.

The district is extremely rural. Walking is the main mode. A guide from the village office is essential for any cross-country travel.

What are the things to do?

  • Blacksmith workshops — Chemba is famous for its traditional ironworking, with smiths producing hoes, knives, and tools from scrap metal using hand-bellows and charcoal forges.

  • Irangi escarpment — the northern edge of the Chemba district meets the Irangi Hills, with dramatic granite outcrops and viewpoints.

  • Rock art sites — a few remote painting sites are scattered in the escarpment, unmarked and requiring a local guide.

  • Blacksmithing demonstration — watch and photograph the forging process (ask at the district office).

  • Escarpment hike — a guided walk along the Irangi Hills with panoramic views.
