Dodoma Region is the centrally located political capital of Tanzania. The city of Dodoma was designated the national capital in 1974 (replacing Dar es Salaam), and the National Assembly and most government ministries have since relocated here. The region sits on a dry central plateau at roughly 1,100 m, characterised by vast baobab-dotted plains, granite inselbergs, and seasonally dry riverbeds. It is the heartland of the Gogo (Wagogo) people, known for their distinctive music, dance, and agriculture (maize, sorghum, groundnuts, sunflowers).
When is the best time to visit?
June–October is the best time: dry, sunny, and moderate temperatures (20–30°C day, 10–15°C night). The long rains (March–May) turn the landscape green but make many unpaved roads impassable. The short rains (November–December) can also bring travel disruption. Dodoma is at its hottest in November–February before the long rains.
Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Dodoma route around them.
WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Dodoma city is compact and walkable. Dala-dalas serve the suburbs. The Central Railway line connects Dodoma to Dar es Salaam and Mwanza/Kigoma — the train is slow but scenic. Buses run to Dar es Salaam (6 hours), Arusha (6 hours), and other regions. The new expressway (Dodoma–Dar via Morogoro) has cut road travel time significantly. Taxis within the city cost TZS 5,000–15,000.
Where should you go?
- Dodoma — the political capital of Tanzania: the Bunge (Parliament Building), Jamhuri Stadium, Gaddafi Mosque, the sprawling Gongo la Mboto market, and nearby Kondoa Rock Art sites.
- Kondoa — a town north of Dodoma famous for the Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings (UNESCO tentative), some of East Africa's most extensive ancient rock art.
- Mpwapwa — a historic German colonial-era hill station with the Church Missionary Society's old church, the Mpwapwa Teacher's College, and scenic views over the Wami River valley.
- Bahi — a small lakeside town on the seasonal Bahi Swamp, good for birdwatching and traditional Gogo pottery.
- Chamwino — a rural district outside Dodoma with the State Lodge (Ikulu) and traditional Gogo villages.
- Kongwa — the Kongwa area was a British groundnut scheme site in the 1940s; today it's a farming and pastoralist centre with scattered wildlife (zebra, giraffe) in the open plains.
- Chemba — a remote district in northeast Dodoma near the Kondoa border, known for traditional ironworking and pottery.
- Mvumi — a market town southeast of Dodoma, with the Mvumi Hospital (a large mission hospital) and the Mvumi Pottery cooperative.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Gogo cuisine centres on ugali (stiff maize porridge) served with mlenda (okra or jute-leaf stew, slimy in texture), nyama choma (grilled meat), and sunflower seed paste. The uji (fermented porridge) of Dodoma is famous. Peanuts and sunflower snacks are ubiquitous.
What is the culture like?
The Gogo people are known for their ngoma dances (the Mtikula and Selebu dance styles), performed at weddings, harvest festivals, and national celebrations. The Dodoma Cultural Festival (dates vary) showcases Gogo music, dance, and craft. The National Assembly holds public gallery sessions when in session (check the Bunge calendar).
Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
WhatsAppWhat are the standout experiences?

- Visit the Bunge — watch a session of parliament (arrange in advance through the visitor office).
- Sunset at Gongo la Mboto — walk through Dodoma's largest open-air market as the sun sets behind the baobab-studded hills.
- Dodoma wine tasting — Dodoma produces Tanzania's only local wine (Dodoma Wine Company); a tasting at the Saba Saba grounds is a unique experience.
