Taboshar
Sughd, Tajikistan
Why visit Taboshar?
Taboshar is a town in northern Sughd Region, located approximately 25 km northeast of Khujand near the border with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It was established in the 1930s as a mining settlement focused on uranium extraction for the Soviet atomic programme and was a closed, secret town until the dissolution of the USSR.
The town experienced a significant post-Soviet decline as uranium mining ceased and the population shrank. Today it is a quiet, somewhat faded settlement with decaying Soviet-era infrastructure, wide empty streets, and a stark, melancholy atmosphere. The surrounding landscape is arid and hilly, with abandoned mine entrances and tailing ponds visible from the main road. The climate is continental: hot summers (35–38°C) and cold winters. Taboshar is primarily of interest to those curious about Soviet industrial archaeology and the legacy of the Cold War uranium industry.

What are the things to do?
Abandoned uranium mine — the main mine entrance is visible from the road northeast of town. The headframe and processing buildings are rusting but intact. Do not enter — radiation levels in some areas may be elevated.
Soviet mining infrastructure — conveyor belts, ore-processing buildings, and administrative blocks from the 1940s–1950s, many now derelict.
Ghost-town atmosphere — the rows of empty apartment blocks, overgrown parks, and silent streets create an evocative post-apocalyptic atmosphere.
Border zone landscape — the town sits near the tripoint of three Central Asian nations, with the Kyrgyz and Uzbek borders close by.
Photography — Taboshar is a haunting subject for urban exploration and Soviet-ruin photography.
Mine museum (if open) — there is a small historical display in the town's cultural centre covering the mining history; ask at the municipal office.
