Why visit Guliston?
Guliston (formerly known as Kairakkum) is a town in western Sughd Region, located on the southern shore of the Kayrakkum Reservoir (the "Tajik Sea") approximately 20 km southeast of Khujand. It is the administrative centre of Guliston District and a popular local resort town built around the Kayrakkum Dam and the reservoir's recreational opportunities.
The town's economy is centred on tourism, fishing, and agriculture, with the lake providing irrigation for cotton fields and orchards in the surrounding district. The Kayrakkum Hydroelectric Station, built in the 1950s, is located nearby and created the large reservoir. The climate is hot in summer, with the lake offering welcome relief. The best time to visit is May–September.
