Why visit Xiluo?

Xiluo (西螺鎮) is a township in Yunlin County, in Southern Taiwan, set on the southern bank of the Zhuoshui River — the longest river on the island. It is a place of farms and food: Xiluo Township is one of the most important vegetable-growing areas in Taiwan, and its name has long been associated with agriculture and, above all, with soy sauce, traditionally brewed here for generations.

The settlement has deep roots. It was called Sailei by the Indigenous Babuza people, and that name became Xiluo through translation from Hokkien into Mandarin; the town was also formerly known as Lethng (螺陽), after the mainland hometown of the Chinese settlers who colonised it. Today Xiluo is a quiet, walkable town with a notable cluster of preserved heritage: a former tutorial academy, an old theatre, an old street of historic buildings, and the landmark Xiluo Bridge spanning the broad Zhuoshui River.

Xiluo is a low-key half-day destination, rewarding for those interested in old streets, temples and traditional Taiwanese craft industries. The climate is humid subtropical to tropical, with hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. The cooler dry season (roughly November to April) is the most comfortable time to visit; summers are hot and humid with a typhoon risk. The town is compact, with the heritage sights, temples and markets clustered along and around Yanping Road.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

Xiluo is most easily reached by road. National Highway 1 passes close by, and the town sits at the southern end of the historic Xiluo Bridge over the Zhuoshui River, on the route between Changhua/Taichung to the north and Yunlin and the south. Driving from Taichung takes roughly an hour. Intercity and local buses serve Xiluo from nearby towns; services are modest, so a car offers the most flexibility.

Xiluo is a small township and its main sights — the old street, the academy, the temples, the markets and the soy-sauce factory — are clustered close enough to explore comfortably on foot. The Xiluo Bridge is a short distance away and walkable. For outlying farmland or onward travel, a car or scooter is useful, as local public transport is limited. Taxis can be arranged but are not abundant.

What are the things to do?

Culture and history

  • Jhen Wen Academy (振文書院), No. 6, Xingnong West Road — a former tutorial academy, built in 1813, where local scholars gathered to study classical poetry.
  • Xiluo Bridge (西螺大橋) — a roughly 2-km-long bridge over the Zhuoshui River; construction began in 1936 but was halted by the Second World War and resumed afterward with US assistance. It also carries political symbolism, marking a historic dividing line between differing voting traditions.
  • Xiluo Theater (西螺戲院), No. 2, Guanyin Street — a theatre building dating from 1940, originally the Xiluo Opera House, funded by the prominent Lin Guang-he clan; closed since the early 1990s.
  • Yenping Old Street (延平老街), around 130 Yanping Road — a street of preserved old buildings with stalls selling local snacks and specialities.

Temples

  • Xiluo Guangfu Temple (西螺廣福宮), No. 32, Xinjie Road — a prominent Mazu temple built in 1764; open roughly 06:00–21:30. Its name means "wide blessing."

  • ZhangLiao Family Temple (西螺張廖家廟), No. 22, Xincuo Road — a series of temple structures arranged around a square central courtyard.

  • Xiluo Fuxing Temple (西螺福興宮), No. 180, Yanping Road — another Mazu temple in the town centre.

  • Tour the Wuan Chuang Soy Sauce Factory (丸莊醬油觀光工廠), No. 25, Yanping Road — a small factory that still makes soy sauce by traditional methods and offers tours to the public; open roughly 08:00–20:00.

  • Walk Yenping Old Street — stroll the old street, browse the historic buildings and graze the snack stalls.

  • Temple circuit — link the town's Mazu temples and the ZhangLiao Family Temple into a short walking tour.

  • Cross the Xiluo Bridge — walk or drive the historic span over the Zhuoshui River.

Where to eat?

Xiluo's food reflects its farming and soy-sauce heritage, with markets at its heart.

  • Xiluo Huanghun Market (西螺黃昏市場), No. 158, Xingnong West Road — a covered market selling fresh produce and local snacks, open early until around 20:00.
  • Dongnan Night Market (東南觀光夜市), Dongnan Road — a typical Taiwanese night market with snacks and bric-à-brac, open Sundays roughly 17:00–23:30.
  • Yenping Old Street snack stalls (budget) — local snacks and specialities along the historic street.
  • Local Taiwanese eateries (budget) — small restaurants and noodle shops; soy sauce naturally features in many dishes.

Vegetarians are reasonably well served given the area's vegetable production and tofu dishes.

Where to drink?

Tap water is treated but is generally boiled or filtered before drinking; bottled water is widely sold and advisable in this rural township. The usual tea and bubble-tea stalls operate around the markets and old street. Xiluo has little nightlife beyond its night market; it is best treated as a daytime destination.
