Fengjia Night Market
Taichung, Taiwan
Why visit Fengjia Night Market?
Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市, Féngjiǎ Yèshì) is widely regarded as the largest night market in Taiwan, sprawling through the streets and lanes around Feng Chia University in the Xitun District of Taichung. What began as a cluster of cheap eateries serving students has grown over decades into a dense, neon-lit warren of food stalls, fashion shops, accessory vendors and arcade games that draws huge crowds of locals and visitors every evening.
The market is less a single street than an interlocking grid of pedestrian-packed lanes — Wenhua Road, Fengjia Road, Fuxing Road and the alleys between them form the core. Because it is anchored to a university, the atmosphere skews young, energetic and trend-driven, and it is often where new Taiwanese street-food fads first appear. It is best treated as an "eat as you walk" destination: a place to graze across dozens of small bites rather than sit down for one meal.
Fengjia is an evening and night attraction — most stalls open in the late afternoon and run until late, with the busiest, liveliest hours after dark, especially on weekends. Taichung's climate is mild and pleasant from autumn through spring; summer evenings are hot and humid but the market still buzzes. A light rain rarely stops the crowds, but a covered jacket or umbrella is handy in the wet season.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest airport is Taichung International Airport (RMQ), in Shalu District northwest of the city. From the airport, reach the Fengjia area by taxi or by bus toward Xitun/Taichung; allow extra time as the airport is not directly linked to the city centre by rail. Most international visitors arrive via Taoyuan and continue to Taichung overland.
By Train
Taichung Main Station (conventional rail) and the High Speed Rail station at Wuri both serve the city. Neither is within walking distance of Fengjia; from either station, continue to the market by city bus or taxi.
By Car / Road
Fengjia is in Xitun District, reachable from central Taichung by city bus or taxi in roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Numerous city bus routes serve the Feng Chia University stop. Drivers should expect heavy congestion and limited parking near the market on busy evenings; paid car parks operate in the surrounding streets.
The market itself is explored entirely on foot — the lanes are pedestrianised or effectively so once the crowds build, and the whole point is to wander. Expect to move slowly through tightly packed alleys; keep an eye on belongings in the crush. To reach the market, use Taichung's city buses (the first set distance is free with an EasyCard) or a metered taxi; ride-hailing apps also operate in the city. There is no metro stop at Fengjia.
What are the things to do?
The Wenhua Road core — The market's main artery, lined end to end with food stalls and shops; the most concentrated stretch of the experience.
Feng Chia University frontage — The campus that gives the market its name and its student energy, marking the heart of the district.
The themed and viral food stalls — Fengjia is famous as a launchpad for new Taiwanese street-food trends; part of the appeal is simply seeing what is currently in vogue.
Graze the stalls — The signature activity: eat your way through the market one small bite at a time.
Shop for cheap fashion and accessories — Lanes off the food streets are packed with budget clothing, shoes, phone cases and trinkets.
Play the arcade and game stalls — Ring toss, claw machines, basketball games and other carnival-style games are scattered throughout.
People-watch — The young, lively crowd and the constant churn of new food fads make Fengjia an experience as much as a meal.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Eating is the entire reason Fengjia exists, and the market is one of the best places in Taiwan to sample street food. Expect Taiwanese classics — large sausage wrapped in sticky rice, stinky tofu, oyster omelettes, fried chicken cutlets, scallion pancakes, grilled squid, deep-fried snacks and shaved ice — alongside a steady stream of inventive new creations that Fengjia is known for pioneering. Prices are low, with most snacks costing only tens of New Taiwan dollars, so the strategy is to sample widely. Vegetarians will find plenty of options among the fried snacks, pancakes, tofu dishes and fruit and drink stalls.
Where to drink?
The market overflows with drink stalls. Bubble (pearl milk) tea is everywhere — Taichung is widely credited as its birthplace — alongside fresh fruit juices, fruit teas, winter melon tea and a range of trend-driven beverages. Stalls selling beer and other drinks are also present. For sit-down options, cafés and bars operate in the surrounding student district. Tap water in Taiwan is generally not drunk unboiled; choose bottled or boiled water.
