Lishan
Taichung, Taiwan
Why visit Lishan?
Lishan (梨山, Líshān) — the name means "Pear Mountain" — is a high-altitude resort area in the far eastern reaches of Taichung municipality, deep in the Central Mountain Range. Sitting at well over 1,900 m, it is a world apart from the warm lowland city: a cool, crisp upland of terraced orchards, forested ridges and big mountain views, historically a centre of fruit growing introduced and developed in the mid-20th century.
Lishan is celebrated above all for its fruit and tea — temperate-climate produce such as pears, apples, peaches and persimmons thrive in the cool air, and high-mountain tea is grown on the slopes. The area developed as a mountain resort along the Central Cross-Island Highway, which once linked Taichung to Hualien through some of Taiwan's most dramatic terrain. Lishan also serves as a staging point for high-mountain destinations beyond, including the alpine farm and forest areas higher up the range.
The climate is the appeal. Lishan is cool year-round and a refuge from lowland summer heat, with mild days and chilly nights; winter is genuinely cold and frost is possible at this altitude. Spring brings orchard blossom and autumn the fruit harvest and turning leaves — both are prime seasons. Mountain weather is changeable, so pack warm layers and rain protection whenever you visit, and be prepared for fog.

By Plane
There is no airport near Lishan; the area is reached entirely by mountain road. The nearest major airports are in the lowlands, and onward travel into the mountains is a long drive by car or bus.
By Car / Road
Lishan is reached by long, winding mountain roads through the Central Mountain Range. Historically it lies on the Central Cross-Island Highway; today it is most commonly approached from the Taichung side via the highland route through the mountains, a multi-hour drive on steep, twisting roads. It can also be reached from the Yilan/Datong side in the north. The roads are scenic but demanding, with switchbacks, possible fog and occasional weather-related closures or restrictions — check road conditions before setting out. Long-distance buses serve the mountain corridor; schedules are limited, so confirm timetables in advance. Drive cautiously and allow generous time.
Lishan is a small, spread-out mountain settlement, and the surrounding orchards and viewpoints are strung along the highway. Having your own car gives the most flexibility for reaching orchards, tea slopes and lookouts. The village core can be explored on foot. Public transport within the area is very limited, consisting mainly of the long-distance mountain bus services, so plan movements around their sparse schedule. There are no taxis on tap, no metro and no ride-hailing in this remote setting.
What are the things to do?
Lishan orchards and tea slopes — Terraced fruit orchards and high-mountain tea gardens cover the hillsides; the working agricultural landscape is itself the main sight.
Mountain viewpoints along the Central Cross-Island Highway — Lookouts give sweeping views of the Central Mountain Range and deep forested valleys.
Lishan village — A compact highland settlement that serves as the area's hub for lodging, food and produce.
Buy fruit at the source — Tasting and buying pears, apples, peaches and persimmons fresh from the orchards is the quintessential Lishan activity.
High-mountain tea tasting — Sampling the tea grown on Lishan's slopes.
Scenic mountain drives — The roads in and around Lishan are an experience in themselves, with dramatic alpine scenery.
Seasonal blossom and harvest visits — Timing a trip to spring orchard blossom or the autumn fruit harvest.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Dining at Lishan centres on the village's small restaurants and the dining rooms of its guesthouses and resorts, serving Taiwanese mountain fare — hearty hot dishes, locally grown vegetables and, of course, the area's fresh fruit. Options are limited compared with the lowlands, and many close early, so plan meals around village hours. Bring snacks for the long mountain drive in and out.
Where to drink?
The obvious local drink is Lishan high-mountain tea, best enjoyed where it is grown; guesthouses and shops will brew and sell it. Fresh fruit juices made from the local harvest are also worth seeking out. Café and bar options are minimal in this remote setting. Tap water in Taiwan is generally not drunk unboiled; rely on boiled or bottled water.

Ask on WhatsAppWhat should you buy?
Lishan's signature purchases are its temperate fruit — pears, apples, peaches, persimmons — and high-mountain tea, sold fresh from orchards, roadside stalls and shops in the village. These make the best souvenirs of a visit. Prices reflect the produce's quality and the remote location; bargaining is not customary, though buying in quantity directly from growers may bring a better rate.
