Jianshi
Hsinchu, Taiwan
Why visit Jianshi?
Jianshi (尖石) is a mountain township in southeastern Hsinchu County, Taiwan, named after the pointed rock formations in the area. It is primarily inhabited by the Atayal indigenous people and offers dramatic mountain scenery, hot springs, and opportunities for hiking and cultural tourism. The town is also home to Smangus (司馬庫斯), a famous remote Atayal village known for its ancient red cypress forest.
The climate is mountainous and cool, much cooler than the plains. The best time to visit is March to November. Summer is pleasant, while winter can be cold and wet.
