Hsinchu Science Park
Hsinchu, Taiwan
Why visit Hsinchu Science Park?
Hsinchu Science Park (新竹科學園區, Xīnzhú Kēxué Yuánqū), commonly known as HSP or Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park, is Taiwan's premier technology hub and one of the most important semiconductor manufacturing clusters in the world. Established in 1980 by the Taiwanese government to attract high-tech investment, the park spans approximately 632 hectares across parts of Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County. It is home to over 500 technology companies, including TSMC, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), MediaTek, and dozens of other major chip design, manufacturing, and biotech firms.
The park is not a traditional tourist destination — it is an active, working industrial and research campus. However, it is of significant interest to tech enthusiasts, industry professionals, and visitors curious about the engine behind Taiwan's economic miracle. The surrounding neighbourhood has developed into a modern, well-serviced urban area with shopping centres, restaurants catering to the highly educated workforce, and green spaces.
Hsinchu sits on Taiwan's northwestern coastal plain with a subtropical climate. Summers (June–September) are hot and humid with temperatures reaching 33–35°C. Winters (December–February) are mild (lows around 12–15°C) with frequent rain driven by the northeast monsoon. The best time to visit is October through December. The park itself is car-dependent and spread out, so plan for taxi or scooter transport between areas.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), approximately 45 km north of the park. A taxi from the airport to the park area costs roughly NT$1,000–1,400 and takes 40–60 minutes. Airport shuttle buses to Hsinchu city centre run frequently (NT$150–200, 70–90 minutes); from there, take a taxi or bus to the park (about 15 minutes).
By Train
The closest TRA station is Hsinchu Station (新竹站), served by express and local trains on the Western Line. From Taipei, express trains take 70–90 minutes (NT$150–300). From the station, the park is approximately 8 km east, reachable by taxi (NT$200–250, 15 minutes) or local bus. The Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) Hsinchu Station in Zhubei is about 12 km from the park; a taxi takes approximately 20 minutes (NT$250–300).
By Car / Road
The park is easily accessed from National Highway No. 1 via the Hsinchu Interchange (新竹交流道). From Taipei, the drive is approximately 70 km and takes 50–70 minutes in normal traffic. From Taichung, it is about 100 km and 70–90 minutes south. Provincial Highway 68 (East-West Expressway) also connects to the park area. Note that rush-hour traffic (07:30–09:00, 17:30–19:00) on Highway 1 can be heavy.
The park is large and not particularly walkable — distances between clusters can be 2–3 km. Most employees and visitors get around by car, scooter, or taxi. Uber and Taiwan Taxi (55688) operate in the area. Some areas have limited bus service (Hsinchu City Bus routes 2 and others serve park entrances), but frequencies are low. A scooter rental is the most flexible option for exploring (available from shops near Hsinchu Station, around NT$300–500 per day). YouBike 2.0 stations are available at several points within the park for short hops.
