Chiayi Park

Chiayi, Taiwan

Why visit Chiayi Park?

Chiayi Park (嘉義公園) is the large, much-loved public park of Chiayi City in southern Taiwan — not a separate town but a green civic landmark, a 26.8-hectare expanse of trees, paths and historic monuments in the city's East District. It has long served as the social heart of Chiayi, busy from dawn until late afternoon with adults, senior citizens and children, and it gathers a striking number of the city's landmarks within a single set of grounds.

The park's origins trace to the Japanese colonial era, and over time it has accumulated layers of the city's history. Within or beside its grounds stand the Chiayi Confucian Temple, the Sun-Shooting Tower, the Chiayi City Historical Relic Museum and the adjacent Chiayi Botanical Garden — so a walk in the park doubles as a tour through Chiayi's culture and forestry heritage. The Sun-Shooting Tower, whose design echoes a giant sacred Alishan tree and whose interior bronze sculpture draws on an indigenous "sun-shooting" legend, is the park's signature structure.

For travellers, Chiayi Park is the ideal place to slow down — a shaded, well-maintained retreat for an unhurried afternoon, easily combined with the nearby Hinoki Village. It is pleasant year-round; autumn through spring (October–April) is the most comfortable, while Chiayi's summers (June–September) are hot and humid, and the park's tree cover offers welcome shade.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Chiayi Airport (CYI) is just outside the city, served by Uni Air domestic flights from Kinmen and Penghu. For international travel, fly into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) or Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) and continue to Chiayi by High Speed Rail.

By Train

Chiayi Park is in central Chiayi City, so the gateway is the Chiayi railway station (嘉義車站) on the TRA mainline at 528 Zhongshan Road — also the departure point for the Alishan Forest Railway. From the station the park is a short taxi ride or city-bus trip across the East District. High-speed arrivals use the Chiayi HSR station outside town, linked to the city by the BRT.

By Car / Road

Chiayi Park sits at No. 264, Qiming Road, East District, easily reached by road from anywhere in Chiayi City and from elsewhere in Taiwan via the national freeway network. Long-distance buses serve Chiayi from the terminal outside the TRA station; from there it is a short local hop to the park.

Chiayi Park is explored on foot — paved paths and trails wind among the trees and link its monuments. The park and the adjoining Botanical Garden are flat and pleasant to walk. To reach the park from the railway station, use a taxi or city bus; once there, everything is within an easy stroll. There are no notable scams; this is a public city park.

What are the things to do?

  • Sun-Shooting Tower (射日塔), No. 46, Gongyuan Street, East District — the park's landmark structure, a 40-m tower whose exterior mimics the wood grain of a giant sacred Alishan tree, with a central void echoing the crack in that tree; inside is a 24-m bronze sculpture inspired by the indigenous Taiwanese "sun-shooting" legend. Open Wed–Sun 09:00–17:00.
  • Chiayi Confucian Temple (嘉義孔子廟), within the park, East District — built in 1706 and relocated to its present site in 1961. Open 06:00–21:00.
  • Chiayi City Historical Relic Museum (嘉義市史蹟資料館), No. 42, Gongyuan Street, East District — a museum of local history within the park grounds; limited English material. Open Tue–Sun 08:00–17:30, closed Sat.
  • Chiayi Botanical Garden (嘉義植物園) — adjacent to the park, an 8.6-hectare botanical garden of trails and ponds with over 140 tree species across 47 families, originally an experimental ground for tropical timber.
  • The park grounds themselves — 26.8 hectares of trees, lawns and walking paths, dotted with smaller monuments and well used by locals for exercise and recreation.

The main thing to do in Chiayi Park is to walk and relax — strolling the shaded paths, climbing the Sun-Shooting Tower for views, visiting the Confucian Temple and the historical relic museum, and wandering the adjoining Botanical Garden among koi ponds, turtles and frogs. The park is a centre of local life from early morning, so it is also a fine place to watch the everyday rhythms of Chiayi — exercise groups, families and senior citizens. It pairs naturally with the neighbouring Hinoki Village for a full half-day of culture and greenery.

Where to eat?

There is no significant dining within the park beyond simple snack and drink stalls. For a proper meal, the city centre is close at hand, and Chiayi is famous for its turkey rice (火雞肉飯) — turkey strips and savoury sauce over rice, sold across town for around NT$20–100, with Fountain Turkey Rice (噴水雞肉飯) on Zhongshan Road the best-known purveyor. The Culture Road night market is the city's top spot for grazing Taiwanese street food.

Where to drink?

Drink vendors near the park entrances sell bubble tea, fresh juices and bottled water. Cafés cluster around nearby Hinoki Village.

What should you buy?

Chiayi Park is a green space rather than a shopping district — expect at most drink and snack vendors near the entrances and the tower. For crafts and souvenirs, the restored dormitory shops of nearby Hinoki Village are the place to go, and Culture Road is the city's main shopping street and night market. Prices at park vendors are fixed; bargaining is not customary.

Where to go next?

  • Hinoki Village — adjacent; a restored precinct of Japanese-era cypress dormitories.
  • Chiayi City centre — a short ride; Culture Road, the night market and turkey rice.
  • Lantan Lake — on the city's edge; a scenic reservoir dug by the Dutch, good for a walk.
  • Alishan — 2–2.5 hours by bus or Forest Railway; Taiwan's most-visited national park.
  • Tainan — about 30–40 minutes by HSR; Taiwan's oldest city and culinary capital.
