Beimen Station

Chiayi, Taiwan

Why visit Beimen Station?

Beimen Station (北門車站) is a historic railway station in Chiayi City, southern Taiwan — not a town but a heritage landmark, and one of the most evocative survivors of the city's forestry past. It is a station on the famous narrow-gauge Alishan Forest Railway, the line the Japanese completed in 1912 to haul giant cypresses down from the mountains. Built largely of timber in the Japanese colonial style, Beimen is the historic city-side station of the Forest Railway, sitting close to the old forestry yards that made Chiayi the lowland hub of the Alishan logging operation.

For most of the 20th century Beimen was the working starting point of the mountain line. Its low wooden platform building, ticket hall and trackside structures embody the era when Chiayi's economy ran on cypress. Today the station and the railway buildings around it form part of Chiayi's forestry heritage circuit, complementing the nearby Hinoki Village and the Forest Railway story told across the city.

Beimen is a short, atmospheric stop rather than a full-day destination — a place to admire timber railway architecture, ride or photograph the historic Forest Railway, and connect the dots of Chiayi's logging history. It is pleasant year-round; autumn through spring (October–April) is most comfortable, while Chiayi's summers (June–September) are hot and humid.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Chiayi Airport (CYI) lies just outside the city, served by Uni Air domestic flights from Kinmen and Penghu. For international travel, fly into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) or Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) and continue to Chiayi by High Speed Rail.

By Train

Beimen Station is itself a station on the Alishan Forest Railway in Chiayi City. The mainline gateway is the Chiayi railway station (嘉義車站) on the TRA network at 528 Zhongshan Road, from which the Alishan Forest Railway departs (separate ticket counter, on the outside of the building); Beimen is a short hop along the Forest Railway line, close to the city centre. High-speed arrivals use the Chiayi HSR station outside town, connected to the city by the BRT.

By Car / Road

Beimen Station is in central Chiayi City and is easily reached by road from anywhere in the city, and from elsewhere in Taiwan via the national freeway network. Long-distance buses serve Chiayi from the terminal outside the TRA station; from there it is a brief local trip to Beimen.

Beimen Station and the surrounding railway-heritage area are explored on foot — the station, its platforms and the nearby forestry buildings are within a compact, walkable zone. To reach it, use a taxi or city bus from the railway station, or arrive by the Forest Railway itself. There are no notable scams; this is a managed heritage site.

What are the things to do?

  • Beimen Station building — the historic timber station, the headline sight: a Japanese colonial-era wooden railway building of the Alishan Forest Railway, prized for its architecture and atmosphere.
  • The Alishan Forest Railway tracks and platforms — the narrow-gauge line and trackside structures around Beimen, part of one of the world's classic mountain railways.
  • Surrounding railway-heritage area — old forestry-railway buildings and yards near the station that tell the story of Chiayi's cypress trade; these connect to the wider Hinoki Village heritage precinct nearby.

The main draw is railway heritage. Visitors come to admire and photograph the historic timber station, and — for train enthusiasts especially — to ride the Alishan Forest Railway, the celebrated narrow-gauge line that climbs from Chiayi towards the mountains and the village of Fenqihu. Exploring the cluster of forestry-railway buildings around Beimen and linking the visit to the nearby Hinoki Village makes for a satisfying half-day on the theme of Chiayi's logging past.

Where to eat?

There is little dining at Beimen Station itself. The city centre is close at hand, and Chiayi is famous for its turkey rice (火雞肉飯) — turkey strips and savoury sauce over rice, sold across town for around NT$20–100, with Fountain Turkey Rice (噴水雞肉飯) on Zhongshan Road the best-known purveyor. The Culture Road night market is the city's top spot for grazing Taiwanese street food.

Where to drink?

Bubble tea and fresh juice stands are found across Chiayi, and cafés cluster around nearby Hinoki Village.

What should you buy?

Beimen Station is a heritage railway site rather than a shopping area; expect at most small kiosks. For crafts, design goods and souvenirs — including cypress-wood items that echo the forestry theme — the restored dormitory shops of nearby Hinoki Village are the place to go, and Culture Road is Chiayi's main shopping street. Prices are fixed; bargaining is not customary.

Where to go next?

  • Hinoki Village — nearby; a restored precinct of Japanese-era cypress dormitories on the forestry-heritage theme.
  • Chiayi City centre — a short ride; Culture Road, the night market and turkey rice.
  • Fenqihu — partway up the Alishan Forest Railway; a historic mountain railway village.
  • Alishan — 2–2.5 hours by bus or Forest Railway; Taiwan's most-visited national park.
  • Chiayi Park — across the city; the large city park with the Confucian Temple and Sun-Shooting Tower.
