Uri is a mountainous canton in central Switzerland, stretching from the shores of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) deep into the heart of the Alps along the Gotthard corridor. It is one of the three founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation — the 1291 Federal Charter was signed here — and the legendary home of William Tell. The canton's dramatic landscape is defined by the Reuss river valley, which rises from the lake at Flüelen through narrow gorges up to the high Alpine passes at Gotthard and Oberalp.
The canton is compact but vertically dramatic: sheer rock walls, alpine meadows, and glacial peaks define the terrain. Altdorf, the capital, sits at the valley floor and is famous for its William Tell monument and chapel. Further up the valley, the landscape becomes wilder — Andermatt, at the crossroads of four major Alpine passes, has transformed from a quiet military town into a world-class ski and golf resort.
Uri's identity is rooted in its role as the historic gateway to Italy. For centuries, travellers, merchants, and armies crossed the Gotthard Pass through this narrow valley, and that legacy of passage and resilience permeates the canton's character. Today, the Gotthard Base Tunnel — the world's longest rail tunnel at 57 km — carries passengers beneath the mountains, while the old pass road above remains one of Switzerland's most spectacular drives.
When to Visit
Summer (June to September) is the prime season for Uri, with warm valley temperatures (20–25°C) and high-alpine trails free of snow. July and August are the busiest months, particularly around Andermatt and the Gotthard Pass. Spring (May) brings wildflowers to the lower meadows while the high passes remain snow-covered.
Winter (December to March) is ski season in Andermatt, with the SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun offering extensive runs up to nearly 3,000 metres. The valley floor is cold and often foggy in winter, so plan for higher elevations. Autumn (September–October) is golden and quiet, ideal for hiking in the lower valleys and enjoying the chestnut forests around Flüelen.
Uri observes several Catholic public holidays beyond the Swiss standard, including Epiphany (6 January), St Joseph's Day (19 March), Corpus Christi, Assumption (15 August), All Saints' Day (1 November), and Immaculate Conception (8 December). Note that 26 December is not a public holiday in Uri if Christmas falls on a Monday.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Uri is strung along the Reuss valley, making north–south travel straightforward. The main Gotthard railway line runs from Flüelen through Altdorf and Erstfeld, continuing via the Gotthard Base Tunnel to Ticino. Regional trains and PostAuto buses connect the valley towns. Altdorf to Flüelen is about 5 minutes by train; Altdorf to Erstfeld is roughly 5 minutes.
The Schöllenen Gorge road connects the upper Reuss valley to Andermatt via Göschenen — a dramatic route through a narrow gorge with the famous Devil's Bridge. PostAuto buses run from Altdorf up to Andermatt (about 1 hour) and continue over the Oberalp Pass to Graubünden. In summer, the Gotthard Pass road opens for a spectacular drive over the Alps.
Lake Lucerne ferries call at Flüelen, connecting Uri to Lucerne (about 1.5 hours by boat) and other lakeside towns. A car is useful for exploring the upper valleys and high passes, but public transport covers the main valley reliably.

WhatsAppCuisine
Uri's cuisine reflects its Alpine, central Swiss character. Cheese is central: Alpkäse (Alpine cheese) and Schabziger (a tangy, herb-infused cheese unique to central Switzerland) are produced on mountain pastures. Rösti — the iconic shredded potato dish — appears on almost every menu, often paired with local sausages or a fried egg.
Dishes are hearty and warming: Bündnerfleisch-style dried meats, Zürcher-style veal, and Alplermagronen (a macaroni and potato dish with cream, cheese, and apples) are staples. In the valleys, look for locally made sausages, smoked meats, and freshwater fish from Lake Lucerne, particularly Röteli (char) and Felchen (whitefish).
Dining in Uri ranges from traditional Gasthäuser in Altdorf and Flüelen to upscale resort restaurants in Andermatt. Farm shops and small dairies sell cheese and dairy products directly. Vegetarian options are available but limited in the smaller villages — Rösti, cheese dishes, and seasonal vegetables are the best bet.
Culture & Festivals
Uri's cultural identity is deeply tied to its founding role in Swiss history. The Rütli oath of 1291 is commemorated on Swiss National Day (1 August) with celebrations across the canton, centred on the Rütli Meadow above Seelisberg. The William Tell legend is woven into local life: Altdorf stages open-air performances of Schiller's play during summer, and the Tell Chapel at Bürglen is a pilgrimage site.
The Landsgemeinde, a traditional open-air assembly where citizens vote by show of hands, was historically held in Altdorf's Landsgemeindeplatz (Uri discontinued it in 1928, but the square remains a symbol of direct democracy). Catholic feast days are observed with processions and village fêtes, particularly Corpus Christi and Assumption Day.
In Andermatt, the Gotthard Cultural Programme brings concerts, exhibitions, and events to the Andermatt Concert Hall, which opened in 2019 and has quickly become a cultural landmark. Traditional folk culture — Alphorn, yodelling, and Schwingen (Swiss wrestling) — features prominently at summer festivals and village gatherings throughout the canton.
