Katunayake
Western Province, Sri Lanka
Why visit Katunayake?
Katunayake is a town in the Gampaha District of Western Province, best known as the location of Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Sri Lanka's main international gateway. The town lies 35 km north of Colombo on the A3 highway, between Negombo to the north and the airport to the south. Katunayake is an industrial and transport hub, with a major Free Trade Zone hosting garment factories and other export-oriented industries.
The town grew rapidly after the airport was built in the 1960s and the Free Trade Zone was established in the 1970s. Today, Katunayake has a multi-ethnic population including many migrant workers employed in the factories. While most travellers simply pass through on their way to or from the airport, Katunayake offers practical stopover accommodation and easy access to Negombo's beaches. The climate is tropical monsoon, best visited December–March.
