Why visit Moratuwa?
Moratuwa is a large industrial and residential suburb in the southern corridor of Greater Colombo, about 18 km from Colombo Fort. It sits on the Indian Ocean coast along Galle Road (A2 highway) and is flanked by the Bolgoda Lake — Sri Lanka's largest natural lake — to its inland side. Moratuwa has long been a centre for Sri Lanka's furniture and woodworking industry, and is also known for its engineering and manufacturing sector.
The University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka's premier engineering university, is located here, giving the town a youthful and academic character. The area was a key battleground during the 1971 JVP insurrection. Moratuwa has a tropical monsoon climate with temperatures around 26–32°C year-round. The best time to visit is December–March when rainfall is lowest.
