About Talawakele
Talawakele is a town in the Nuwara Eliya District of Central Province, located at an elevation of 1,200 m between Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. It is a major centre of Sri Lanka's tea industry, surrounded by some of the island's finest tea estates including the famous Kenilworth and St. Clair's plantations. The town was established during the British colonial period as a tea-growing centre.
Talawakele has a predominantly Tamil population, with a heritage tied to the tea plantation economy. The scenic drive through Talawakele's winding mountain roads, past rolling tea gardens, is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful journeys. The climate is cool and misty, with temperatures 15–24°C. Best visited December–April.

By Plane
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB IATA) is 155 km northwest. Taxi takes 4 hours (Rs 12,000–16,000).
By Train
Talawakele Railway Station is on the scenic Colombo–Badulla line. The train journey from Colombo Fort takes about 4–5 hours (Rs 400–1,500). The station is an important stop for tea estate workers and tourists.
By Car / Road
Talawakele is on the A7 highway, 10 km east of Hatton and 35 km west of Nuwara Eliya. Buses from Hatton take 20 minutes. Buses from Kandy take 2.5 hours (Rs 200–350).
Tuk-tuks. The town is small. Walking through the surrounding tea plantations is popular.

Tea Plantation Views — Talawakele's hillsides are covered with meticulously maintained tea gardens, a photographer's paradise. Kenilworth Tea Estate — One of the highest tea estates in Sri Lanka, with stunning views. Elgin Tea Factory — Another historic factory open for visits.
