Lughaya

Awdal, Somalia

Why visit Lughaya?

Lughaya is a coastal town on the Gulf of Aden in the Awdal region of Somaliland, about 50 km south of the Djibouti border and 200 km northwest of Berbera. It is the seat of Lughaya District, whose population (over 100,000 across the district) is mainly of the Mahad 'Ase subclan of the Gadabuursi Dir. Fishing and herding are the town's traditional livelihoods, and as of the mid-2020s Somaliland has been advancing plans and feasibility work for a new commercial port at Lughaya, aiming to position it as a regional trade hub.
