Ulawa Island is a small island in Makira-Ulawa Province, Solomon Islands, located northeast of Makira (San Cristobal). The island is of volcanic origin, rising to 300 m, and is covered in dense tropical forest. Ulawa is known for its traditional Polynesian-influenced culture, distinct from the Melanesian populations on neighbouring islands. The resident population speaks the Ulawa language, an Oceanic language. The surrounding reefs offer excellent diving. The climate is tropical with heavy rainfall year-round, particularly from December to March.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport with scheduled service is Kirakira Airport (IATA: IRA) on Makira Island. Solomon Airlines flies from Honiara to Kirakira several times a week. From Kirakira, Ulawa is reached by local boat — about 2–3 hours depending on sea conditions.

By Car / Road

not relevant — the island has no roads connecting to other islands. Access is by boat only.

Ulawa is small enough to walk around. Footpaths connect the coastal villages. Canoes are used for short trips along the coast.
