Koindu

Koindu is a small border town in the far east of Sierra Leone, lying close to the tripoint where Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia meet. It functions primarily as a cross-border trading post, with goods flowing between the three countries. The town is surrounded by forested hills and agricultural land.

The climate is tropical, with heavy rainfall from April to September. The dry season from October to March is the best time to visit.

The nearest major airport is Lungi International Airport (IATA: FNA), approximately 380 km west.

By Car / Road

Koindu is reachable from Koidu via a rough road, about 2–3 hours in the dry season. Road conditions deteriorate significantly in the rainy season. From Kailahun, it is about 1–2 hours north.

Koindu is compact and walkable. Motorcycle taxis (okada) provide local transport.

• Border market — A lively cross-border trading area where goods from Guinea and Liberia are exchanged.

• Visit the border market and observe the flow of regional trade.

• Walk in the surrounding hills for views of the tri-border area.

Street food stalls serve rice, sauce, and grilled fish. Limited options.

Drink only bottled or purified water.

Koindu has very basic guesthouse accommodation catering to traders. Most travellers pass through from Koidu or Kailahun as a day trip. The nearest reliable accommodation is in Koidu, 2–3 hours west.

The border market offers goods from Guinea and Liberia — fabrics, palm oil, dried fish, and basic provisions.
