Eastern Province is Sierra Leone's diamond-rich region, a land of dense rainforest, rolling hills, and vibrant mining towns. Bordered by Guinea to the north and Liberia to the south, it is home to the country's largest surviving tract of Upper Guinean rainforest — the Gola Rainforest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The province is defined by its mineral wealth and its resilient, welcoming communities.
The province's main towns — Kenema, Koidu, Kailahun — each tell a different story of Sierra Leone's past and present. From the diamond markets of Koidu to the biodiversity of Gola, Eastern Province offers adventurous travellers an authentic glimpse into the country's forested interior and the daily rhythms of life beyond Freetown.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Eastern Province is during the dry season from October to March, when roads are passable and hiking trails in Gola Rainforest National Park are accessible. The rainy season from April to September brings heavy downpours that can make the dirt roads to Koidu and remote villages impassable. Birdwatching is best from November to April.
Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Eastern route around them.
WhatsAppHow do you get around?
The main trunk road connects Freetown, Bo, and Kenema on a well-tarred highway. From Kenema, the road to Koidu and Kailahun is rougher and in poor condition beyond Matotaka, requiring a 4WD vehicle. Minibuses (poda poda) and shared taxis operate between towns, though services to more remote villages are infrequent. The drive from Kenema to Koidu takes about 3–4 hours in the dry season.
Where should you go?
- Kenema — The provincial capital and third-largest city in Sierra Leone, a commercial hub on the main trunk road.
- Kailahun — Historic town near the Liberian border, a gateway to Gola Rainforest National Park.
- Koidu — The heart of Sierra Leone's diamond mining region, with a rugged frontier-town character.
- Segbwema — Small town in the east, known for its agricultural surroundings.
- Koindu — Border town near Guinea, a trading centre for the region.
- Pendembu — Eastern town near the Liberian border, surrounded by farmland and forest.
- Daru — Small settlement in the eastern interior near the Liberian frontier.
- Gola Rainforest National Park — Sierra Leone's largest rainforest reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site rich in chimpanzees, pygmy hippos, and forest elephants.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Eastern Province's cuisine is centred on rice, cassava, and groundnut (peanut) stews. Palm oil is used generously in cooking. Cassava leaves (plasas) cooked with fish or meat is a staple dish. Fresh fish from the Moa and Sewa rivers supplements the diet. In Kenema and Koidu, street food stalls sell fried plantains, grilled meat skewers, and puff-puff (fried dough balls).
What is the culture like?
Eastern Province is predominantly Mende, with Temne and other ethnic minorities. The region observes Islamic and Christian holidays, though traditional Mende ceremonies remain important, including initiation rites and harvest celebrations. The diamond trade defines much of Koidu's culture, while Kenema hosts lively weekly markets where traders from across the region gather.
