Kenema
Eastern, Sierra Leone
Why visit Kenema?
Kenema is the third-largest city in Sierra Leone and the administrative capital of Eastern Province. Situated on the main trunk road connecting Freetown to the eastern border, it is a bustling commercial centre and the primary gateway to the Gola Rainforest National Park. The city is home to a mix of ethnic groups, predominantly Mende, and serves as a hub for the region's diamond and timber trades.
The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from April to September and a dry season from October to March. Kenema is compact and relatively easy to navigate, with the central market area forming the heart of the city.
