Ranerou

Matam, Senegal

Why visit Ranerou?

Ranérou is the capital of Ranérou-Ferlo department in the Matam region of Senegal, and the only commune in that department. It lies on the N3 road connecting Dakar and Touba to the west with Ouro Sogui (Ourossogui) and Mauritania to the east. Population figures vary by source and boundary definition: the town itself was recorded at just over 3,000 in 2013, while the wider department (a large, sparsely populated stretch of the Ferlo) had around 41,660–48,475 residents in the 2000s. The department sits in the semi-arid Ferlo pastoral zone, an area historically used for extensive cattle grazing.
