Kanel is a town and urban commune in the Matam region of northeastern Senegal, and the capital of Kanel department. Its population grew from about 12,975 (2013) to roughly 15,244 (2023 census). Kanel gained commune status in 1996. The wider department, which includes the communes of Kanel, Semmé, Waoundé, Dembankané, Hamady Ounaré, and Sinthiou Bamambé-Banadji, preserves several historic sites linked to the Islamic scholarly and Sufi heritage of the Futa Toro region, including the mausoleum of the 19th–20th century Sufi scholar Cheikh Moussa Kamara at nearby Ganguel.
