It has grown from a population of 13,177 (2002 census) to about 27,222 (2023 census), and became a commune in 1990. It functions as an important market and transport hub for the region, with a lively central market lined with boutiques, wholesalers, clothing stores, and fruit sellers serving as the economic and social heart of the area.
