Saraya

Kédougou, Senegal

Why visit Saraya?

Saraya is the chief town of Saraya department, one of the three departments making up Kédougou Region since its 2008 creation. The area is at the centre of southeastern Senegal's gold-mining sector: the nearby Sabodala mine, developed by Teranga Gold, is the largest industrial mine in the Kédougou region, and both licensed and informal artisanal gold-panning sites are widespread across the department, from Mako to Tomborokoto and around Saraya itself. The mining boom has brought both economic activity and strain — parts of the surrounding area outside the town centre lack reliable electricity, and local infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with the influx of mine workers.
