Why visit Niokolo-Koba National Park?

Niokolo-Koba National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Senegal's largest national park, covering 9,130 km² in southeastern Senegal. It protects savannah, gallery forests, and the Gambia River ecosystem, and hosts lions, elephants, chimpanzees, hippos, and over 300 bird species. Access is from the park headquarters near Tambacounda or Kedougou.

How do you get there?

Accessible by road from Tambacounda (about 100 km) or Kédougou. A 4WD is recommended given the unpaved park roads.

What are the things to do?

  • Game drives — wildlife includes lions (a Panthera-led conservation program has helped the population recover from roughly 10–15 individuals in 2011), elephants, Derby elands, chimpanzees, hippos, and leopards, alongside gallery forest and Gambia River habitats.
  • Walking safaris and boat trips on the Gambia River, offered by park-area lodges.
