Salemata

Kédougou, Senegal

Why visit Salemata?

Salémata is a small town about 80 km west of Kédougou, considered the rustic capital of Bassari Country and home to roughly 1,500 people. It sits amid the rolling hills of the Fula–Bassari–Salémata area of the UNESCO-listed "Bassari Country: Bassari, Fula and Bedik Cultural Landscapes," where the Bassari people maintain an agro-pastoral landscape of terraces and rice paddies. Salémata hosts a weekly market and is known for traditional crafts such as palm-wine making, and the area is one of the more accessible places to see wild chimpanzees, typically arranged through local campement guides. Bassari initiation ceremonies traditionally take place around May, offering a rare window into the community's traditional festivals for visitors who happen to be in the area at the right time.
