Rufisque is a historic port city east of Dakar and one of the oldest European trading settlements in Senegal, alongside Dakar, Gorée, and Saint-Louis. It was a major colonial-era trading post, especially for exporting peanuts (groundnuts). The old quarter retains 18th- and 19th-century colonial architecture, much of it in need of restoration.
