Bargny

Dakar, Senegal

Why visit Bargny?

Bargny is a coastal commune of around 70,000 people about 15 km east of Dakar, on a sheltered bay. Founded as a fishing village by the Lebou people, it remains heavily dependent on fishing, which still accounts for the majority of the local economy. The town is also home to one of West Africa's largest cement plants (Sococim, opened 1984) northwest of the settlement, and is the site of a planned deep-water mineral export port. Rising seas and coastal erosion are an ongoing challenge for the community.
