Why visit?

Vieux Fort is a district at the southern tip of Saint Lucia, centred on the town of Vieux Fort — the island's second largest settlement and the site of its main international airport. The district occupies a broad, flat coastal plain at the base of the island, bounded by the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The landscape is characterised by wide beaches, agricultural land, and the windswept terrain of the southern cape.

The town of Vieux Fort has a population of roughly 5,000 and serves as the commercial and administrative centre of southern Saint Lucia. The Friday night market is one of the liveliest on the island, drawing vendors and visitors from across the south. The district includes Hewanorra International Airport (UVF), the island's main gateway for long-haul flights, as well as the Maria Islands Nature Reserve — home to endemic reptiles and nesting seabirds.

Vieux Fort's character is distinctly local and unpretentious. Unlike the resort-dominated north and southwest, the district retains a working-town atmosphere with a busy fishing harbour, a commercial centre, and a strong sense of community. The nearby Sandy Beach (Anse de Sables) is one of the island's best beaches for windsurfing and kitesurfing, drawing a sporty, international crowd.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season from December to May is the best time to visit Vieux Fort, with lower rainfall and temperatures averaging 27–30°C. The southern tip is windier than the rest of the island, with consistent trade winds that make it ideal for wind and kite sports from December to July. The rainy season (June–November) brings heavier showers. Hurricane season peaks August–October.

The Vieux Fort Friday Night Market runs year-round and is the district's signature event. Jounen Kwéyòl (Creole Heritage Month, October) features cultural celebrations. The Marguerite and La Rose flower festivals (October and February respectively) are also observed.

What should you eat?

Vieux Fort's food culture is rooted in Creole cooking, with fresh fish and local produce forming the basis of most meals. The Friday night market is the culinary highlight, with stalls serving grilled fish, lambi (conch), crab backs, accras, johnnycakes, and a range of Creole dishes. The town's lolos and informal restaurants offer green banana and saltfish, breadfruit and codfish, callaloo soup, and cocoa tea.

Grill N Chill in Aupicon is known for its wraps — try the grilled pork or smoked fish with garlic sauce. Dining ranges from EC$10 at market stalls to EC$50 at sit-down restaurants. The district produces bananas, cocoa, and root crops, and roadside fruit stands sell tropical produce year-round.

What is the culture like?

Vieux Fort has a strong Creole cultural identity, with Kwéyòl widely spoken and traditional customs well-preserved. The town is home to the George Odlum Stadium, which hosts football matches and community events. The fishing harbour is a social hub, with daily activity centred on the catch.

The Friday Night Market is the district's cultural centrepiece — a lively gathering of food vendors, musicians, and community members. Jounen Kwéyòl (October) features traditional dress, Creole cuisine, folk music, and storytelling. The La Marguerite and La Rose flower festivals celebrate rival Creole cultural societies with song, dance, and elaborate costumes.
