Middle Island

Why visit Middle Island?
Middle Island is a coastal village and administrative center of Saint Thomas Middle Island Parish on the western leeward shore of Saint Kitts. Situated along the main coastal highway roughly 14 kilometers northwest of the capital, Basseterre, the settlement sits directly between the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea and the rainforest-covered slopes of Mount Liamuiga.
The area marks the starting point of British colonization in the Caribbean. In 1623, English explorer Sir Thomas Warner established Britain's first Caribbean colony here and in adjacent Old Road. Today, Middle Island remains a quiet rural community centered around agriculture, fishing, and landmarks from the seventeenth-century colonial and sugar plantation era.
The climate is tropical maritime, characterized by warm temperatures year-round. Daytime highs range from 27°C to 31°C (81°F to 88°F), with nighttime lows rarely falling below 22°C (72°F). Positioned on the western leeward coast, Middle Island receives less direct rainfall and experiences calmer coastal conditions than settlements facing the Atlantic Ocean.

By Air
The nearest airport is Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (IATA: SKB), located 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southeast of Middle Island on the outskirts of Basseterre. The airport handles direct international flights from Miami (American Airlines, 3 hours), Charlotte (American Airlines, 4 hours), Atlanta (Delta, 4 hours), New York JFK (JetBlue, 4.5 hours), and London Gatwick (British Airways, 8.5 hours with a brief stop in Antigua). Regional carriers including Caribbean Airlines, InterCaribbean Airways, and Winair connect Saint Kitts with Antigua, Barbados, Sint Maarten, and Puerto Rico. Middle Island is a 20- to 25-minute drive from the terminal by rental car or taxi.
By Bus
Public transportation is operated by privately run 14-seater minibuses identifiable by green license plates starting with "H". Buses running the West Line route between Basseterre's Ferry Terminal and Dieppe Bay travel along the Island Main Road directly through Middle Island. Buses depart every 10 to 15 minutes between 06:00 and 19:00 on Monday through Saturday, with reduced frequency on Sundays. The one-way fare from Basseterre to Middle Island is EC$4.00 (approximately US$1.50). Pay the driver in Eastern Caribbean Dollars or US dollars in cash upon exiting.
By Car
Middle Island is accessed via the Island Main Road (the main ring road encircling the island). From Basseterre, drive northwest along the coastal highway through Challengers and Old Road Town; the journey covers 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Driving is on the left side of the road. Visitors must purchase a temporary local driver's permit (EC$62.50 / US$24 for 3 months), which rental car agencies issue on site upon presentation of a valid national driver's license.
By Train
No passenger commuter train service exists on Saint Kitts. The historic 30-inch narrow-gauge St. Kitts Scenic Railway operates purely as a 3-hour guided sightseeing tourist excursion on the island's northeast coast; it does not provide transit service to or through Middle Island.
The village itself can be explored on foot along the main road and side paths. For traveling to nearby attractions like Wingfield Estate, Old Road, and Brimstone Hill:
- Minibuses: Flag down any passing westbound or eastbound minibus on the Island Main Road by waving from the roadside. Short hops between adjacent villages cost EC$2.50 to EC$3.00 (US$1.00 to US$1.10).
- Taxis: Licensed taxis carry yellow license plates beginning with "T" or "TA". Taxis lack meters; fares are set by government tariffs based on destination zones. A one-way taxi ride between Basseterre and Middle Island costs roughly EC$65 to EC$80 (US$25 to US$30). Confirm the fare and the currency (EC$ or US$) with the driver before starting the trip. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft do not operate in Saint Kitts.
- Rental Cars: Available at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and downtown Basseterre from international and local agencies. A rental car provides the most practical method for visiting historical sites, mountain trailheads, and coastal beaches around the western parishes.
